Dear Pink Readers,

You received two versions of The Pink News Letter today. The server that I use to distribute The Pink News Letter was experiencing technical problems. They are aware of the problem and worked diligently to correct it. Please accept my sincere apology for this issue and continue to enjoy our monthly publication.

CANCER CURE CONSPIRACY THEORY
I know that many of you have it in your mind that there IS a cure for cancer and that the government is keeping it a secret because of the money cancer research and treatment generates. This has been in the back of my mind for years. Watching loved ones suffer and die as a result of greed is a hard pill to swallow. The only thing that keeps me focused is running this foundation and constant prayer. I believe God would have me put my energy into doing something positive about the problem verses complaining about it. So I am committed to raising awareness about this disease and to providing support for those affected by it. I realize I can’t make them release that cure but they can’t keep me from spreading the word about the benefits of early detection either.

One of my responsibilities as President of this foundation is to make sure I'm doing all I can to educate our community about this disease. Right now, early detection is the closest thing we have to a cure for breast cancer so make sure you are having your clinical breast exams & yearly mammograms. Remind your mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, cousins and co-workers to do the same. Join me in this fight! Detecting breast cancer early CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE.

If you or someone you know needs breast cancer information or support please email us: info@stepandthinkpink.org

TAX DEDUCTIONS
I would like to thank all of the 2009 Pink Contributors. Words can’t express how much I truly appreciate you and your support. By now, you should have received written acknowledgement of your tax deductible donation. If you have not received it please email: info@stepandthink.org.

PINK VOLUNTEERS
On behalf of the foundation, I would like to personally thank you for your contribution of time and energy during 2008-2009. Our events could not have been successful without the help of you and the many other volunteers who donated their time. If you need written acknowledgement of your volunteer services and have not received it, please email: info@stepandthinkpink.org. We hope you will continue to support our efforts by raising awareness about the benefits of early detection.

YOU NEED TO KNOW...

Unlike lung cancer, for which smoking is the biggest and most powerful risk factor, there is no single factor that is responsible for the majority of breast cancers in women.

Nevertheless, there are three factors which strongly increase a woman's risk of developing this disease: advancing age, family history of the disease, and a personal history of breast cancer.

Remember, more women are diagnosed with breast cancer who have none of the above risk factors so be sure to do a monthly self breast exam and have your yearly clinical exams.

A TEN YEAR OLD LITTLE GIRL DIAGNOSED w/Breast Cancer?

Hannah Powell-AuslamWhen Hannah Powell-Auslam went to the doctor to get a lump in her breast checked, the first thing doctors told her parents is, “Cancer should be the furthest thing from your mind.”

But a biopsy revealed the unthinkable: Hannah had a malignant tumor. While it’s technically possible for anyone with breast tissue to get breast cancer, the chances of a 10-year-old being stricken with the disease are less than one in a million. The case has stunned the medical world because no one in the medical community believed it could be true. The youngest case known of breast cancer was a 16yr old.

After months of debilitating treatments, including a mastectomy and chemotherapy, tests recently showed that Hannah’s cancer was no longer detectable. The sweetly soft-spoken sixth grader, who’s now 11, talked about her initial reluctance to tell her parents about the itchy lump in her breast–an understandably embarrassing prospect for a 10-year-old.

Fortunately, she braved the discomfort and her mother was smart enough to bring her to a doctor immediately. Hannah’s father discussed the unimaginable difficulty of telling Hannah that she had cancer. “We wanted to be able to answer all her questions,” he said. So they spent several days doing research before they broke the news to Hannah. But no amount of research could have prepared them for the pain of hearing their daughter ask, “Am I going to die?”

Hannah’s doctors themselves were at a loss as to Hannah’s prognosis. “All of our data is based on a totally different age group,” one of the doctors said. But now that Hannah is back to playing softball and hanging out with her friends, we have one story that shows the prognosis can be very good.

TRIPLE NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER ><TNBC
10 yr old Hannah was diagnosed with this type of breast cancer

What does Triple Negative Mean?
This means her cancer is negative for estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor receptor involvement. Most successful treatments for breast cancer target one or more of these receptors. What this means is that her cancer is very difficult to treat and it is very rare. Risk Factors

The Best defense against breast cancer is a good offense. There are no perfect solutions, but you can do many things to reduce your risk of developing the disease.

STOP WEARING A BRA?

It has been said that wearing a bra for the whole day compresses the lymphatic system of the breast, resulting in accumulation of toxins that cause breast cancer.

We know of only one scientifically-conducted epidemiologic study that investigated a possible link between bra use and breast cancer. This study suggested that breast cancer might be less common among women who do not wear bras than among bra wearers. However, breast cancer risk in the two groups was not significantly different, according to standard statistical criteria, and the researchers themselves expressed uncertainty regarding this correlation. They also noted that if there is any connection, it would most likely have occurred indirectly, because women who are obese or have larger breasts are less likely to go braless. Obesity has been identified by numerous studies as a breast cancer risk factor, and having large breasts has been suggested in some studies as increasing breast cancer risk for young women who are not overweight.
